Danville, Ky. – Shaili Kumar picked a good time to score her first collegiate goal as her header gave the DePauw women's soccer team a 3-2 overtime win in their season opener against Piedmont.
Running down the right side of the field, Bridget Brendza found Kumar right in front of the net as Kumar headed in the game winner in the 97th minute.
A Piedmont goal by Samantha Ishee 11 minutes into the game had DePauw trailing for most of the first half. However, two unanswered goals by the Tigers put control right back into their hands.
Off an assist from Kumar, Kathryn Ruark hit her first goal of the season at the 48 minute mark. Rebekah Crone broke the tie 30 minutes later at the 76 minute mark via an assist from Ali Grimm. Piedmont's Cassidy Reich scored in the 83rd minute to push the game into overtime.
DePauw held the advantage in shots (13-6), shots on goal (7-4) and corners (5-0).
The Tigers return to action Sunday when they face John Carroll.
