Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw goalie Lis Hawkins stopped 14 Illinois Wesleyan shots and Taylor Summers notched a hat trick as the Tigers opened the season with a 7-6 win over the visiting Titans. The win was the first for DePauw head coach Tucker Glass. Illinois Wesleyan dropped to 2-2.
The teams exchanged goals throughout the first half as Illinois Wesleyan grabbed a 3-2 lead at the intermission. Summers put the Tigers ahead with two goals in the opening 8:07 of the second half before the Titans evened the score at 4-4 on Sara Dust's score.
Emma Flynn delivered her second goal of the game with 16:29 remaining and Summers made it 6-4 with a goal with 15:13 left.
Claudia Richman closed the gap 55 seconds later before Madi Lozanoski extended the lead to 7-5 just 14 seconds after that. The Titans' final goal came with 5:08 remaining as Grainne Kelly scored, unassisted.
DePauw held on in the closing minutes with Hawkins stopping a couple of shots in the final 1:10.
In addition to the three goals from Summers and two by Flynn, Nicole Gibson assisted on a pair. Dust led the Titans with two goals. Of Hawkins' 14 saves, 10 came in the second half, while Claire Quest finished with five for Illinois Wesleyan.
DePauw outshot Illinois Wesleyan, 26-14 and held a 44-31 edge in ground balls. The Titans also held an 8-7 advantage in draw controls.
Strafanie Buffa and Annie Barrett each collected four ground balls with Marisa Ellison causing three turnovers. Dani Engelbreit led Illinois Wesleyan with seven ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls.
DePauw travels to Mount Union on Saturday, March 11, for a 1 p.m. contest.
