Tigers Open NCAC Play with Win over Hiram

Greencastle, Ind. - Sydney Kopp led DePauw with 17 points, while Kylie Morris posted a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Tigers opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with a 56-47 win over Hiram. The Tigers, ranked 15th in the latest coaches' poll and 18th by D3hoops.com, improved to 5-1 overall, while Hiram dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC.

DePauw scored the final four points of the first quarter to take a 16-12 lead and expanded it to 25-20 at the intermission.

The margin was still five at 27-22 before Emily Budde hit two free throws followed by Claire Keefe's jumper and two charity tosses from Kopp to make it 33-22. The Terriers trimmed the deficit to six late in the fourth before the Tigers took a 42-35 advantage into the fourth.

Hiram briefly cut the DePauw lead to six early in the fourth, but Keefe's layup followed by two free throws from Budde and Melinda Franke's layup pushed it to 12 at 48-36. DePauw's largest lead was 15 when Budde's jumper capped a 5-0 run and made it 53-38 with 4:04 left.

The Terriers scored the next seven to close to within eight, but Morris hit a bucket with 41 seconds remaining to seal the win. 

Kopp matched a season high with her 17, while Morris' 13 boards were a career best. Keefe followed with 10 points and matched a career-high with nine rebounds and Franke added 11 rebounds.

Alainna Conroy paced Hiram with 12 points, while Allison Vannoy added 11. Sarah Spehn grabbed six rebounds in the loss.

DePauw shot 33.3 percent from the floor to Hiram's 37.0 percent and the Tigers outscored the Terriers from the line, 13-5. DePauw held a commanding 49-32 edge on the boards and converted 19 offensive rebounds into a 16-2 edge in second-chance points.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game against Allegheny in Neal Fieldhouse.
