St. Louis, Mo. – Julian Gonzalez's second half goal and a dominant defensive effort led the DePauw men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Westminster (Mo.) in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
Gonzalez scored in the 64th minute when he headed the ball into the net off a rebound. Alieu Musa was credited with the assist.
It was the only tally in an otherwise quiet offensive display for both teams. A lot of credit had to be given to the defense as DePauw outshot Westminster 16-8 and won the corner advantage 10-2.
"We don't really change what we do game-to-game or team-to-team," DePauw coach Brad Hauter said on the WashU livestream after the game. "The guys have an understanding of how to play. That's what they've done all year, and they're fantastic back there."
Goalkeeper Chris Yount made two saves in the shutout.
DePauw moves to 12-3-4 on the year and will face Washington-St. Louis at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday. Westminster finished the year at 17-3.
