Tampa, Fla. – The DePauw men's basketball team defeated Buena Vista on Wednesday 81-79 to win the Tampa Bay Shootout for the seventh consecutive season.
It was a close game throughout with 10 lead changes and seven ties, but a trio of 3-pointers early in the second half gave the Tigers the lead for good with 14 minutes left to play. Hankins scored from beyond the arc on back-to-back trips and Vogel added another as the Tigers went from trailing 51-50 to leading 59-53 in a matter of about two minutes.
The Tigers went on to claim its biggest lead of the game 73-63 with 6:51 remaining. A 3-pointer by Buena Vista at the end of regulation made the final outcome as close as it was.
DePauw shot 50 percent from the floor (31-of-62) and 54 percent from 3-point range (13-of-24), while Buena Vista shot just 43 percent (31-of-72) and 29 percent from three (7-of-24).
DePauw was outrebounded 38-36 and allowed 13 second chance points. However, they showed good ball movement, tallying 19 assists and seven fastbreak points. The DePauw bench outscored Buena Vista's 25-16, led by Mark Johnson's eight points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Lattner was named the MVP of the tournament. He averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and three assists over the two days. Hankins joined him on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 9.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds.
This is the 10th year of the Tampa Bay Shootout. After falling in the championship game the first three years, the Tigers have won the championship every year since.
The Tigers are back in action Jan. 3 when they travel to Allegheny for a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup.
