Chillicothe, Ohio – Rain did not dampen the DePauw baseball team's outing during their first round matchup against Denison in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday in a 12-5 victory.
Rain started to come along hard and steady beginning in the seventh inning, but by that time the Tigers had already built a 5-1 lead and only added on in the seventh with an additional two runs. Five more runs in the ninth gave DePauw a 12-2 lead before Denison tacked on three runs to close the game.
Wyatt Spector pitched a fine game, going eight innings to improve to 4-5 on the year. He gave up seven hits and two runs, with just one being earned. He also struck out four batters.
Zach Huarte (6-3) took the loss for Denison (26-13), going 6.2 innings and giving up five earned runs. He struck out nine batters.
DePauw, as the visiting team, came out of the gates swinging, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning as the first four batters reached base. Tate Stewart was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to get the runs going.
In the second inning, Lucas Italiano doubled to score Thompson.
Innings 3-6 went by quietly until Thompson and Connor Einertson recorded RBI singles in the seventh.
The Tigers stay in the winner's bracket and will face Wooster at noon on Friday. They defeated Ohio Wesleyan in their first round game 9-3.
